It’s been a big big year for DJ Friendly (DJ Фрэндли).
Moving to London from Australia in late 2002, Friendly launched himself upon the UK breaks scene like an adolescent Godzilla in a bad mood. His first release with Boombox Records (Greedy Filthy Dirty/ F***ing In Public) gained support and respect from many breaks heavy weights and woke up an unsuspecting crowd to his fresh brand of break beat.
Next off the pressing plant was Glottal Stomp/ Foot Rocker through Fat! Records, which gained plays and props from the likes of Hyper, Soul of Man, Meat Katie, Krafty Kuts and Freq Nasty. An all out party cut with a dirty bass line and trademark Friendly production, this still became something of a classic in the breaks scene.
DJ Friendly (DJ Фрэндли) soon found his musical home with Fat! Records, working closely with Paul Arnold. He is now resident at Chew the Fat nights at The End, The Key, the Bug Bar, as well as touring Australia with Paul for the Fat is Five album launch. Friendly has also played Mother Bar, Rhythm Factory, Catch22, Board X, on Kiss FM, BBC1 with Annie Nightingale, Groovetech and Ministry Radio, all over the UK and over to Budapest.
Next releases for DJ Friendly (DJ Фрэндли) were in the shape of remixes for Daddy on Fat! Records, Smithmonger for TCR, Presser, Toby Neal, and Keith Prodigy’s new band Flint.
DJ Friendly (DJ Фрэндли) was also the man responsible for possibly the biggest bootleg of the year- LFO by LFO. Originally he produced this track just to allow him to play it out again, but it was quickly snapped up, pressed up and then caned by every respected breaks DJ and crossed over to some tech-house djs. The Plumps (to whom it was largely attributed), the Stantons, Rennie Pilgrem, Soul of Man, UNKLE, and Freeland all gave this a belting. It drove the crowds insane at every major festival across the UK, and it was the track that closed the Berlin Love Parade. The record company who own the rights (ZYX Records) gave it the thumbs up and have licensed it back off Friendly, even Warp Records, the original owners have given it their stamp of approval.
DJ Friendly (DJ Фрэндли) has previously enjoyed success in Australia. His first album “Hello Bellybutton” was released on his own record label Gulp Communications, and nominated for an ARIA Award. This lead to being the first Australian act to sign to Zomba Records. Through Zomba, Friendly released a string of singles including “Some Kind of Love Song” featuring Sia Furler of Zero 7 fame, and his sophomore album “Akimbo”, which was flogged on radio and music television, and debuted at 22 on the national charts. With a live show in tow, Friendly toured Australia numerous times, playing at clubs and every major festival including Big Day Out three years running. Despite things well and truly cooking at home, DJ Friendly (DJ Фрэндли) looked to new challenges and a more underground direction in London. He ditched the live line-up and relocated to London in October, 2002.
Now just over a year later,DJ Friendly (DJ Фрэндли) is ready to unleash his first UK album, titled “Ten Things You Need To Know About Friendly”. A DJ mixed album made up exclusively of Friendly’s remixes, bootlegs and 12” all DJ-mixed together, this is an insight into the Friendly brain. It features the bootlegs LFO-LFO and hardcore classic On a Ragga Tip by SL2, as well as Friendly remixes of Daddy, Presser and Toby Neal and a heap of new and recent Friendly tracks.
The first 12” sampler from the album has just been released, and features the Friendly remix of Presser’s “2Black2Gay”. This track started it’s life as a house cut produced by DJ Friendly (DJ Фрэндли) and Toby Neal under the name Presser, which Friendly remixed into the current breaks monster, and it’s is getting slaughtered by all concerned, with some djs dropping it twice a night. Now that’s just silly. Freq Nasty, Soul of Man, Plumps, Meat Katie, Krafty Kuts, Kid Kenobi, UNKLE, Rennie are all on board and giving this record peak time club plays. On the flip is another collaboration between Friendly and Toby Neal with Sneaker Sex, on the more electro-house tip and showing a different side to the Friendly psyche.
The album will be release February 2004, with a bunch of shows around it in the UK, a national tour with Big Day Out Australia and club dates on the side, along with shows in Tokyo and Europe. TCR have signed a Friendly track Fetish featured on the album for release April 2004, as well as a new release on Finger Lickin this spring.
Things are looking in order for another big year for DJ Friendly (DJ Фрэндли).
